Desmin (DES) - Marker for muscle cells

Desmin is an intermediate filament protein specifically found in all types of muscle cells (skeletal-, cardiac- and smooth muscle cells). Desmin is important for muscle cell architecture and cell structure since the protein connects many components of the cytoplasm. In striated skeletal muscle desmin also functions to connect myofibrils to each other.
